Tintype Portrait Session

$ 125.00
We have run out of stock for this item.

Maurene Cooper of Vanity Tintype will be on-site with us in the shop, the weekend of June 12th and 13th with her mobile darkroom and studio set up for one-of-a-kind tintype portrait sessions.

$125 gets you a 40-minute portrait session where several images will be produced on a large-format 19th-century camera at 5x7”. You will choose your favorite image to be varnished and picked up within the week along with a display easel or framing option and an edited digital image file for social media sharing.

You will have the option to purchase the additional images at the time of the session as well as a high-end digital print reproduction of your tintypes

Due to the process of this medium and the size of the photographic plates used, a maximum of 3 people is recommended for this session. If you would like 4 or more people in your tintype, Maureen welcomes you to schedule a session directly with her at info@vanitytintype.com.

What is tintype

Think of tintype as the elegant goth ancestor to the polaroid. Tintype is a 19th-century photographic process invented in 1851. The process remained the predominant image-making technology until the end of the 1870s. Tintype involves coating a sheet of tin with a sticky substance called collodion which is then submerged in a bath of silver nitrate. Essentially I am creating a piece of film which I will expose to light, develop and stop. In the fixing process, the tin plate can be exposed to daylight and you will see a blue negative turn into a black and white positive. Once washed and dried, the plate is coated with a layer of shellac and is ready to be taken home. The resulting image is a one-of-a-kind modern heirloom.

Tintypes are unique handmade objects with occasional imperfections. I will always reshoot for my own errors, blinks, or chemical failures.
